Alaska’s Unforgettable Luxury Fishing Retreat
On September 11, 2026, Maxim published a feature on The Lodge at 58* North titled "Inside The Lodge at 58* North, Alaska's Unforgettable Luxury Fishing Retreat." Maxim Executive Editor Nicolas Stecher wrote it, and photographer Jeremy Koreski shot it, after spending six days with us on the Naknek River in King Salmon, Alaska.
The Lodge at 58* North is a small luxury Alaska fishing lodge in the heart of Bristol Bay, owned and run by longtime Bristol Bay guides Kate and Justin Crump. Our guests fly out daily in our private de Havilland Beaver floatplane to remote rivers, fish our home water on the Naknek, and see brown bears in Katmai National Park. We're grateful to Maxim for telling that story so vividly.

What Maxim Experienced Firsthand
Stecher didn't write from a press kit. He and his group lived the full program at The Lodge at 58* North: the fishing, the fly-outs, the cabins, the dining and the bears.
Fly-out fishing in a 1954 de Havilland Beaver
Most mornings the group took off from our dock on the Naknek River in our 1954 de Havilland DHC-2 Beaver floatplane. The flights crossed Katmai National Park for close to an hour without passing a road or a building. On the first fly-out they landed on a remote lake, hiked to a small stream, and caught Dolly Varden on the fly with Justin guiding.
When wind grounded the Beaver one afternoon, the group fished the Naknek for sockeye by boat instead. That kind of daily adjustment is how we plan every trip. Learn more about fly-out fishing from the lodge and our Naknek River home water.
Wild salmon, trout and char
Over six days the Maxim team fished for Dolly Varden, sockeye and king salmon, and saw red fox, mink and bald eagles along the way. See which species we target and when, or plan around our Bristol Bay fishing seasons.
Private cabins with Scandinavian design
Stecher stayed in our riverside two-story A-frame, one of three guest cabins, with minimalist Scandinavian design and a queen bed on each floor. Brown-bear viewing at Brooks Falls, Katmai National Park
On the final day the Beaver flew the group over the glacier-blue Iliuk Arm of Naknek Lake to Brooks Camp. There they watched brown bears fishing for sockeye at Brooks Falls, a sow with three cubs, and three large bears play-fighting a few feet away. Chef-driven "Bush Gourmet" dining
Chef Jason Brown's kitchen gets serious attention: a new dinner every night and a menu rebuilt every two weeks. He cooks with Naknek salmon, Alaskan scallops, Mat-Su Valley meats and produce from our own greenhouses. Stecher singles out a miso black cod over crispy rice with dashi as Michelin-worthy. The story behind the lodge
Maxim also tells our story. Justin's family has commercial-fished Bristol Bay since the 1960s. Kate was the first woman to guide steelhead on the Oregon coast and is an ambassador for Patagonia, YETI and Sage. They started a Naknek River guide service in 2016, bought the former Rainbow Bend Lodge in October 2021, and rebuilt it largely by hand. Read our story and meet the team.
