Moments From The Field: Sunrise Fires

Sunrise Fires & First Pike: A Week of Wild Surprises at The Lodge at 58* North

Fall fishing in Alaska keeps delivering magic. This week at The Lodge at 58* North, the mornings opened with soft frost and ended with unforgettable moments—both on the water and around the fire.

Fishing Highlights

Guests experienced the full spectrum of Bristol Bay fishing:

  • A guest who traveled all the way from Argentina caught his very first pike—and joked he’ll hang the photo in his doctor’s office where patients might mistake it for a golden dorado.
  • Other anglers landed huge Arctic char, while others swung flies on our home waters and hooked big rainbow trout, a fun change from the usual late-season bead fishing.
  • On a small stream fly-out, we found more trophy rainbows eager for streamers, proof that rainbow trout fishing in Alaska never stops surprising us.

Wildlife Encounters

The week felt like a wildlife documentary:

  • Caribou wandered along the beach,
  • Several bull moose made appearances—including one right on the property (we’re pretty sure Hailey called it in!),
  • Bears were spotted across the river from the lodge, and even a wolf crossed our path.

These moments remind us why Bristol Bay Alaska is one of the wildest, most pristine places on earth.

From the Lodge Kitchen

Chef’s special this week: carrot cavatelli pasta with Alaskan scallops and prawns. The house-made sausage of scallops and prawns paired perfectly with carrot pesto, herbed bread crumbs, and slow-roasted Alaskan tomatoes—a true greenhouse-to-table celebration of autumn flavors.

Cozy Moments

We gathered for an early-morning fire on the beach, coffee in hand, as a gorgeous sunrise lit the river. These quiet times—where the only sound is the crackle of driftwood—capture the heart of what makes our Alaska fishing lodge experience so special.

Behind the Scenes

This week we welcomed Will Phelps of Phelps on the Fly, who filmed and photographed the adventure for his YouTube channel. We can’t wait to share the stories and images he captured of life here at The Lodge at 58* North.
