July Newsletter: A Note From Kate

Hi Friends,

What a week up here at 58* North. The weather was absolutely blissful—long stretches of sunshine, warm breezes, and those golden evenings that remind you why summer in Alaska is pure magic.

Fishing our home water delivered in a big way. Guests limited out on sockeye and had a blast chasing big king salmon. Several even caught their first-ever king and chum salmon—always such fun to witness. Guests also landed big rainbows during a smolt bust.

Over at Brooks, the sockeye run was so dense the bears were scattered across the whole river. It made for some of the best bear viewing we've seen all season. And if that wasn't enough wildlife for one week, we heard wolves howling along the river and then later spotted a sow with three tiny spring cubs.

One guest visiting from Holland spotted three bird species she'd never seen before. The excitement was contagious and reminded us just how much wonder is tucked into every corner of this place.

Back at the lodge, the kitchen turned out something truly special: Bahn Mi Donuts—yes, donuts—topped with pork pâté with cilantro aioli, radish kimchi, and crispy chicharron. The pork came from a pig we brought in from Palmer and butchered ourselves, and the vegetables were straight from our own garden.

There were cozy nights around the fire pit, laughter echoing down the boardwalk, and that easy rhythm that sets in when you're surrounded by good people and wild places. We even got to help a couple celebrate their honeymoon this week—a beautiful reminder of how meaningful these experiences can be.
