Frosty Mornings & Hot Fishing at The Lodge at 58* North

Fall fishing in Alaska has officially arrived, and last week at The Lodge at 58* North proved why this season is so unforgettable. Crisp mornings greeted us with the first frosts of the year while the rivers delivered non-stop action and some of the best rainbow trout fishing in Bristol

Garden-to-Table Dining

In the kitchen, our culinary team celebrated the harvest with true greenhouse-to-table flair:

  • Pan-roasted rockfish served with creamy polenta, collard greens, and a bright green tomato relish
  • Roasted kohlrabi with pickled apples and watercress, every bite rooted in our own garden

Each dish showcased the lodge’s signature blend of Alaskan ingredients and fresh produce grown steps from the dining room.

Fishing Highlights

We braved icy rod guides as guests chased big Bristol Bay rainbows in intimate small streams. One of the week’s best moments? A guest handed Guide Hailey Alfson the rod—and she landed her personal-best rainbow trout with the guest on the net!

From streamer fishing to swinging flies on our home water, the action stayed hot even as the mornings cooled.

Wild Alaska Encounters

Beyond the river, the wild put on a show:

  • A lynx sighting during an evening fly-out
  • Spring bear cubs spotted from the floatplane
  • A herd of twenty caribou seen from the air
  • Two bull moose across from the lodge—including one that strolled right onto the property

Moments like these are why Bristol Bay Alaska remains one of the most spectacular wilderness destinations in the world.

Evenings at the Lodge

Back at camp, Victoria kept spirits high with whiskey sours and bourbon Negronis, while our greenhouse surprised us with the first gladiolas of the season. We closed the week with a “re-invigoration” party—mullets for the chefs, karaoke, and a lot of laughter.

As one guest put it best:

“We will be ambassadors for your lodge!”

Young Hank, the week’s youngest angler, left dreaming of becoming a fishing guide—proof that The Lodge at 58 North* continues to inspire the next generation of Alaska fly fishers.

Special thanks to Nick Basaraba, Craig Ricks and our guide team for the photos.
