Notes From the Field: The 2026 Season Is Underway at The Lodge at 58* North

There is a feeling that arrives with the first stretch of the season at The Lodge at 58* North. The river starts to set the rhythm again. Boats head out in the morning. Guides compare notes over coffee. Guests come back to the lodge with stories from the water, and dinner becomes the place where the day gets retold.

The last few weeks have been full of those moments.

We saw our first bear across the river from the lodge, then another bear moving through the field. Those sightings are always a reminder of where we are: on the Naknek River in Bristol Bay, surrounded by the kind of wild Alaska that still feels untamed, immediate, and unforgettable.

The fishing has already given us plenty to talk about, too. Guests have caught sockeye salmon, rainbow trout, Dolly Varden, and even a trophy Arctic grayling. For anglers looking for an Alaska fly fishing trip with variety, these early-season weeks are a beautiful reminder of how much this region can offer.

Of course, the fishing is only part of the story.

What makes time here special is the way each day builds from one experience into the next. A morning on the water. A run upriver or a change in plans based on conditions. The quiet thrill of seeing wildlife from the lodge. A fresh lunch in the field. A return to the comfort of the lodge, where guests settle in for appetizers, dinner, and the kind of conversation that only happens after a full day outside.

That combination is what we love most: world-class Bristol Bay fishing paired with warm hospitality, comfortable cabins, thoughtful meals, and a small-group experience that lets each trip feel personal.

For some guests, the highlight is the fish. For others, it is the bear across the river, the floatplane lifting off toward remote water, or the first evening around the table when strangers start to feel like friends. Most often, it is all of it together.

As we move deeper into the 2026 season, we are grateful for the guests who have already joined us and excited for the weeks ahead. If you have been thinking about a last-minute Alaska fishing trip, we do still have limited remaining 2026 availability. And for those already looking ahead, now is a smart time to start planning a 2027 trip, especially if you are hoping for prime summer dates.

The season is here. The river is alive. And we would love to share this place with you.
